We have so much to explore in NH...and I don't like the idea of a list full of bushwhacks. Your adventures inspire me as I'm training for my first thru-hike, and I can't wait to hear about the JMT and your nabbing another highpoint!Emilyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15774723596066936707noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6109746923888360185.post-28695438597006875132014-08-01T21:41:46.531-04:002014-08-01T21:41:46.531-04:00"after about two hours of shoving through tig..."after about two hours of shoving through tightly woven and scratchy pines, one is REALLY ready to be on a trail"

Or even a fairly well defined herd path, as I found out on MacNaughton.

"I'm not sure I'll do any more 'whacks, though".

Unless you get the peakbagging itch again and decide to do the New England Hundred Highest or the New England Fifty Finest.

Anyway, good work (all three of you)! And good luck on the JMT. I'm looking forward to hearing all about it this fall.

Dennis Paul Himeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12905541399039171716noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6109746923888360185.post-20852289521327159792014-08-01T09:03:37.268-04:002014-08-01T09:03:37.268-04:00Thank you, Marcy! Armed with only a map and compass, one can shove through over a mile of thick woods to find a specific summit (we don't use GPS units). That's a great skill to have. Also, I've enjoyed showing my kids that as long as they have a map and compass, they'll never be lost in the Whites. It might take them longer than they'd like to hike out to a trail or a road, but they'll get there eventually with a map and compass (and rain gear, fleece/hat, and water).

The other side of the coin is that after about two hours of shoving through tightly woven and scratchy pines, one is REALLY ready to be on a trail. Also, it's an intense, full-body workout. The arms and hands are constantly pushing away heavy branches, the back is twisting to get between tightly-spaced trunks, etc. It truly feels like swimming against a strong (and sharp!) current.

I'm glad we've had the experience of bushwhacking. I'm not sure I'll do any more 'whacks, though. Alex would like to do a few more, but I think she might have to wait until Sage and I can drum up some more enthusiasm. I applaud your achievement, though :)Marcyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18146625702822086807noreply@blogger.com
